About

Sculptor& painter.

John Conway — Irish sculptor and painter, photographed at Ben Bulben, County Sligo, Ireland

I make geometric abstract paintings and hard-edged sculptures built from joined elements, concrete, and paint. My practice is driven by the pure act of discovery — searching for interesting shapes that emerge on the canvas and demand to be made physical. I catch these forms in my paintings first, then construct them in three dimensions by fusing 3D-printed PLA parts and layering them with concrete to give digital lines a grit, weight, and presence that you can feel when you stand in the room with them.

FAQ

Do you accept private commissions?

Yes. The artist is available for private and public commissions throughout Ireland and internationally. Each commission begins with a consultation to discuss the core concept, scale, material, and specific site requirements. Get in touch to start a conversation.

What materials do you work with?

The artist's painting practice utilises acrylic or oil on canvas, while early-stage maquettes are developed in PLA polymer using 3D printing technology. Sculptural work is primarily realised in high-performance pigmented pre-cast concrete.

What inspires the geometric forms in your sculpture?

The interlocking geometric language emerges from the artist's sustained interest in architecture, collective movement, and the brief moments strangers share space. Each form is conceived as a character — distinct but interdependent, like passengers on a platform.

Are works available to purchase?

Selected paintings and maquettes are available for acquisition. Please contact the studio directly with any enquiries. Public sculpture commissions are typically handled on a project basis through open calls or direct commissioning bodies.

Do you exhibit or work with galleries?

The artist has exhibited extensively across Ireland in solo and group shows, including at RuaRed Arts Centre, Visual Carlow, Dunamaise Arts Centre, Garter Lane Waterford and the RDS. Gallery and curatorial enquiries are always welcome.

Are you a member of any professional bodies?

Yes. The artist is a long-standing member of Visual Artists Ireland (VAI), the representative body for professional visual artists in Ireland. This membership ensures the studio operates in line with best-practice standards for the visual arts sector.
